STREET FIGHTER II — OLD GAME, NEW LEGACY

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior released in February 1991 and became an arcade phenomenon spawning a legacy that would survive the test of time. Street Fighter II would continue to succeed through its 1994 release of Super Street Fighter II Turbo (ST/2X), the most competitive fighting game in existence. Capcom followed up with the Street Fighter II series twice more with the subsequent releases of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (2009), and Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers (2017), but the story doesn’t end there.

Long time veteran of the Street Fighter II series, Born2SPD of Brazil, felt there was even more to the quality of 2X and embarked on a journey to investigate the game’s source code. After nearly a decade of exploration, Born2SPD developed Super Street Fighter II Turbo: New Legacy (NL), an unofficial rom hack of 2X which aims to add balance and variety, fix bugs, and implement new features, adding joy to a series three decades old. On February 5, 2020, v0.1 of NL released for public testing.

While streaming on Twitch in April 2020, American 2X players Riz0ne and Megaman X tested the early beta and facetiously considered running a tournament for the unexplored, but familiar game. Passion met pressure as community members kindly urged we turn the lighthearted comment into a reality. One of those community members Sabin, who also is among the earliest members of the Fighting Game Community, was brought into the equation as our premiere streamer, and v0.3 was ready for tournament play. A reflection of 2X in a parallel universe (and of oneself), the tournament series called “2X in the Mirror” (2XITM) was born. This would also be the boom of Riz0ne’s path in organizing tournaments and building a community for all generations of Street Fighter players.

Throughout the 2XITM events, Born2SPD has taken feedback from notable players and character specialists and implemented them to further enhance the balance of the game. Another lighthearted comment, but also a reality by Riz0ne is “Born2SPD is the most knowledgeable person in the code and frame data of 2X on the planet.”

Replacing ST with this rom hack was never the goal. I think that will never happen, not even CAPCOM can do it, let alone someone else. See this as a tribute to ST, not a replacement.

  • More than a year passed since the last 2X in the Mirror, and this time we're back running 0.71. Some of the notable changes include harmonized speed setting for all stages, a reversal throw message if executed on the first frame, new palmod for stages, and new win quotes.

    On September 25th, 2022, Riz0ne hosted the 7th edition of 2XITM running it back with the Star Cup format. Players must choose Random Select followed by one old and one new character, in any order.

  • After a 6 month break, 2X in the Mirror is back with Super Street Fighter II: New Legacy v 0.5, courtesy of Born2SPD!

    With a slight twist on the traditional 3-character "Star Cup" format, players must choose Random Select followed by one old and one new character, in any order. This further highlights the strategy, balance, and excitement of New Legacy.

    On June 13th, 24 players from USA, CAN, and MEX fought it out to see who is the overall best New Legacy player while fighting for a $500 pot!
