A BATTLE BEYOND YOUR IMAGINATION

Sequel to the massive crossover between two of the biggest publishers, Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 (CvS2) would become one of the most diverse titles in all of fighting games. With 44 selectable characters and 6 dynamic grooves to choose from, there are no boundaries to how casual and competitive players can express themselves. However, with all of the rereleases of legacy titles with netplay support on modern platforms, we would never see the revolution of CvS2.

And then in June 2020, NullDC BEAR (Beat Em All Raw), a netplay application was released giving limited, but bearable access to peer to peer battles, keeping the spirit of CvS2 alive while an interest was sparked in a new generation of players.

Using BEAR, Southern California’s fighting game expert, Silentscope, created Coastal Versus Series, a biweekly tournament series open to the United States. In January 2021, Silentscope and Riz0ne alternated as hosts for the East and West events as the title suggested. Veterans and newcomers meshed together to show off all the grooves and practically every character in the game.

Although the series has gone on a hiatus after 13 two-day tournaments, BEAR development is making progress and matchmaking may go beyond fighting locally.
